Axis Studios provided a full range of VFX for the episode, Flatline, in season 8 of the BBC’s Doctor Who. Directed by Douglas Mackinnon, the episode contains 66 VFX shots, including a new multi-dimensional menace called the Boneless. The team conceived, designed, and developed the look and performance of this new, impossible creature.

The Boneless are a race that exist in two dimensions; they’re first seen as they explore planet earth, distorting three-dimensional surfaces as they go. As the creatures continue to spend more time in three dimensions, they begin to evolve and explore with potentially devastating effects.

Hewlett and Axis creative director, Stu Aitken, worked together to deliver a plan, leveraging high-end performance capture techniques from the animation team – this included 3D body scanning and motion capture.
